Light The Chain

What is LIGHT THE CHAIN

Light the Chain is a non-commercial social experiment. In 2026 we released 100 lighters from Stuttgart, Germany into bars, bookshops and parks across Europe, each carrying a QR code to this site. When you find one and scan it, you become part of the chain. Register your find to mark its journey. Then you pass it on.

It's not a giveaway. It's a question: how far can one small object travel through human hands?

01

Find a Lighter

02

Scan the Code

Every lighter has a unique QR code that links you to its journey so far.

03

Leave Your Mark

Add your city, your moment, your name — and become part of the story.

04

Pass It On

Hand the lighter to someone new. Keep the chain going. See how far it travels.

FAQ

What is Light the Chain?

Light the Chain is a social experiment. We released 100 custom lighters into the world, each carrying a unique QR code linked to this site. Every time someone finds one and scans it, a new link is added to the chain. The goal: see how far one small object can travel through human hands.

How do I find one of the lighters?

We've placed lighters in bars, bookshops, parks, and public spaces across Europe. There's no map of exact locations — that's part of the experiment. You might find one left on a table, tucked on a shelf, or passed directly by someone already in the chain.

What happens when I scan the QR code?

You land on this site and see the lighter's full journey — every city and moment it has passed through before reaching you. You can then add your own mark: your city, the date, a note. You become the next link in the chain.

Do I have to pass it on?

Nobody is watching. But the experiment only works if the chain keeps moving. Passing it on — to a stranger, a friend, or just leaving it somewhere new — is the whole point. The further it travels, the better the story.

Can I buy one of the lighters?

Not right now. The lighters are meant to be found and passed on, not purchased. If the experiment continues we may release more batches — but they will always be released into the wild, not a shop.

Will I have to do anything else?

Just scan, leave your mark, and pass it on. That's it. No account, no app, no commitment. The lighter does the rest.

Who is behind this?

A small group of people curious about how far trust and objects can travel. We're not a brand. We're not selling anything. We just wanted to see what happens when you let go of something and trust the chain.
